Gum Disease not old age is the biggest reason people in the United States lose their teeth.
Gum disease (also know as periodontal disease) is an infection of the tissues and bone that support the teeth. Untreated gum disease can become serious, causing the destruction of bone and connective tissue. Teeth often become loose and may have to be removed.
Often a silent epidemic, gum disease may progress painlessly, producing few obvious signs, even in the late stages of the disease.
Possible Warning Signs:
- Gum tissue that bleeds during and after tooth brushing
- Red, swollen or tender gum tissue
- Any sign of gum tissue pulling away from the teeth
- Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
Whos at Risk?
- Often, the tendency for developing gum disease is inherited.
- Other things that may increase the risk for gum disease include:
smoking, poor oral hygiene, hormones, poor immune system, diet, certain medical conditions and certain medications.
The good news is that in most people, gum disease is preventable. Attention to everyday hygiene (brushing and flossing), coupled with professional cleanings, may prevent or actually reverse the early stages- and help you keep your teeth for a lifetime.
